I'm going skiing with the kids today.

If you regularly get that temp you'll want to start thinking about heating up your engine block before starting.

Or finally clean out the garage so you can start it in the garage.

Or both

Nah, just get a good battery. Engine block heaters are left over from the days of shitty batteries. Look at that cold start number when you buy one.

Battery for the win. I got a new one just a few weeks ago (with a new starter) and it fires up. Granted it won't do that in 4 years when a hard cold comes along. Also for the win is the battery warranty. Went under with a couple months left to go. Got a free one!

Sweet! My batteries usually go bad a couple months After the warranty runs out.

Put a trickle charger on your battery. One you plug into the wall versus a solar unit. Not only will it keep your battery topped off, but the charging process will keep your battery somewhat warmer than it otherwise would be if no charger was attached. I have not had to plug in the block heaters on any of my vehicles in the 10+ years I've been using trickle chargers.

Bonus: It extends the life of your battery (especially if you use one that also desulfates).

Side note: Where I live it's been getting down into the -30oF+ (at night) for the past few weeks.

I use 0w20 in all my cars and a partially heated garage. Never had any trouble.

Its not to start it

You're already in the car, you might as well go. It'll warm up in awhile.

That is very hard on the engine. Especially if it is something manufactured in the last 20 years or so.

That's a real weeny shrinker. We got 4" of rain then 8" of snow and temp drop to 16.

It was 75 here a few days ago, the temp supposed to drop to 30 in 2 days, wtf niggies

Hopefully you didn't hear those rods in the engine scratch. It's around that temp that oil gums up and when you cold start the car if it's left outside you get that awful sound.

Pfft.
It's -24°F a bit further north.
