Girls don’t read

[ - ] x0x7 3 points 3 monthsFeb 22, 2025 11:10:12 ago (+3/-0)

That's false. Though maybe the backgrounds should swap because women mostly read romantic novels, or something that pretends it isn't one but still is.

That’s what I said.

What's the picture on the left? Two legs cut off at the knee? What's the little rectangle?

[ - ] Ragnar 2 points 3 monthsFeb 22, 2025 11:46:41 ago (+2/-0)

Penis.

It’s probably a door though. A closed door behind which lies a world of imagination or something

[ - ] Greasy 3 points 3 monthsFeb 22, 2025 13:08:33 ago (+3/-0)

No, it's not a penis. It's something truly magical. And the legs belong to a fellow who will soon experience something unforgettable. :')

It's is father coming into his room to "tuck him in" once again. (The next day his dad buys him a new video game....)

That distracted me, also.

I like it.

I prefer nonfiction.

Did you know that some random book about processing leather made more money published in a country that didn't have copyright than Mary Shelley's Frankenstein?

Yes but the problem is exposure. Once you're exposed, either way you're melded. And you're here already exposed saying you can rise above the bad stuff and just go for the good stuff. If we're saying we can handle the bad stuff and make the judgement call for newer generations, then so can they.

Also we can't say all fiction is bad for people, but it's hard to separate what is truly bad from truly good.

I don't think we can stand on the giant of all this media exposure and say to newer generations "This stuff is bad for you so you can't have it. Oh I've been exposed to it and I'm just fine, maybe even better, but you can't have because it's bad".

That logic just doesn't work out. Maybe it's true, but that logic right there doesn't work out. And I don't follow through with things in practice where the logic doesn't follow through. Infact if the logic is pure hypocrisy, I have no choice but to follow through with the opposite because that's what's currently logically holding through.

People used to say books were evil and were destroying people's imagination and sense of family and elderhood, since stories and legends were supposed to be passed down by kin, not by strangers.

Visual media aids in building imagination when anchored in a state of truth and consumed in moderation. There isnt enough of that in the world in easy access, so limiting it makes total sense

[ - ] CoronaHoax 2 points 3 monthsFeb 22, 2025 09:29:04 ago (+2/-0)

since stories and legends were supposed to be passed down by kin, not by strangers.

I mean there is a very good point here. Stories still co-opt masses of peoples from their locality and kin to a bigger hive mind.

I guess as time passes for both print, video and music, your locality and kin will become which of these stories you pass to your kin and locality. And we could choose to pass down local / kin stories ourselves too. Which is another thing, now we're becoming conscious of it which is bigger and better than just getting it without knowing you were.

It's like before we were insulated from the threat, but didn't know it. Previously we were at the complete mercy of the threat and didn't know it. Now we're fully aware of the threat, insulated, defending from it, taking over and conquering the threat. We're actually set to be in a stronger position if we take it over.
