Need some boy names for my soon-to-be-born baby

submitted by frankenham to whatever 2 monthsFeb 23, 2025 15:50:03 ago (+21/-0)     (whatever)

Been busy making babies, my 2nd is about to be born in a week or so and we're still up in the air with names.

At the moment we're thinking Samuel Jonathan. We want to go with something more classic and White.

Other contenders were Harrison and Charles. Suggestions would be appreciated

Look back in your respective family trees and honor an ancestor so their name and thereby they are acknowledged.
I wish I had done that long ago when my kids were born.
Shamefully it didn't cross my mind.
I just wanted to satisfy my own ego and "pick" a cool name with no family context.
I had great and great great grandfathers that were warriors.

My first born was named after my parents first born who passed at birth, and Jonathan is the middle name of my 2nd brother who passed at a young age as well. My mothers side has "Finley" which means White warrior which I thought was pretty cool but having a hard time working that in

Consider male relative first or middle names for kiddo's middle name.

All kiddos first name are unique in the family, but share their middle name with someone.

[ - ] dingbat 2 points 2 monthsFeb 23, 2025 19:54:10 ago (+2/-0)

I think the first name has to have a flow with your surname. If your surname is of Scandinavian descent, I always thought Lars was a cool name for a boy. Sean, or as you were saying, Finley (call him Finn) is cool if you’re Irish. If your last name sounds English, William or Jack sound nice.

Rudolph. - Hear me out.
Call him Rudy as a toddler, and Dolf as a teenager and adult.

Burkhart - German name meaning Brave and Strong.

Matthias - German version of Matthew.
Heinrich - German version of Henry. Can be shortened to Rick.

Rudiger - Call him Rudy as a kid
Wilhelm

Samuel (Hebrew: שְׁמוּאֵל Šəmūʾēl, Tiberian: Šămūʾēl) [1] is a male name and a surname of Hebrew origin. It means "name of God", deriving from the Hebrew Shem (שֵׁם) (which means "name") [2] + ʾĒl (which means "God" or "deity"). [3] However, from the explanation given in 1 Samuel 1:20, the name could alternatively come from a contraction of the Hebrew ...

Congrats to you and your family! An unsolicited word of advice for having the second child is to really understand that each child is an individual. What may have worked for the first time might not be effective for this little guy but you will make do and thrive.

Depends on your last name but Charles is the best you have listed here in my opinion. Samuel is a joo name. I gravitate toward classic names like George, William, James, Andrew (Jackson) or better yet family names.
I think Rudolf, Theodore, Hadrian and Provolone are the best ones listed in this thread.

[ - ] frankenham [op] 0 points 2 monthsFeb 24, 2025 02:28:53 ago (+0/-0)

Is Samuel really that jewy? I know it's hebrew in origins but I feel like its drifted to being a more classic name now. My name is technically hebrew too but I feel like in modern use it's not associated with being jew.

[ - ] NeverHappened 0 points 2 monthsFeb 25, 2025 02:27:27 ago (+0/-0)

Some of my extended family have joo names b/c they are Christians and those names are in the Bible. Many non-joos have names of Hebraic origin. If you and your wife really like Samuel the best then it doesn't really matter where it comes from. Another option is to have the legal name and then a private name for the family to refer to him. He can change his legal name to that later if he desires.
Also I guess I glossed over the Jonathan part in your post. That is a good name and a common name in my family as well. Ultimately whatever you pick will be fine. I didn't look into the name meanings too much when choosing names for my kids but it is remarkable how well the personalities fit! Maybe the name chooses the meat haha.
One last thing to consider is if the initials would spell out anything unpleasant. I've seen kids with initials PMS, DOA, ETA and ASS for example. While amusing, not sure the kid would appreciate lol.
Hoping for a smooth delivery and recovery for you all.

You're asking about a Jewish name on voat? Poor troll attempt

[ - ] frankenham [op] 1 point 2 monthsFeb 23, 2025 16:07:49 ago (+1/-0)

I feel like most classic White names originate from the bible, which have hebrew origins.

Even my own name is originally hebrew but I wouldn't consider it jewish.

Now if I was going with something like Schlomo Fitzberg that'd be alittle different..

[ - ] Sal_180 0 points 2 monthsFeb 23, 2025 16:16:35 ago (+1/-1)

White names don't originate from Hebrew and the middle East

[ - ] frankenham [op] 0 points 2 monthsFeb 23, 2025 16:25:39 ago (+1/-1)

Well I'm all ears for your suggestions then

[ - ] Sal_180 1 point 2 monthsFeb 23, 2025 16:39:44 ago (+2/-1)

Look at a map. Look at northern Europe. Pick a name you like from there if you want a white name. Don't pick a name from the middle East.

[ - ] Irelandlost 0 points 2 monthsFeb 24, 2025 06:21:02 ago (+0/-0)

I’m from Northern Europe. Most of our names are either biblical or saints’ names but some are translated into our own languages. We’ve been Christian for over a millennium now, it was pretty inevitable we would adopt names from that faith.

[ - ] Sal_180 0 points 2 monthsFeb 24, 2025 06:29:37 ago (+0/-0)

most

That word means there's plenty to choose from. You're Irish? Or are you telling me there's no Irish names that don't originate from the middle east? Did all Irish names stop when Christianity came?

[ - ] Irelandlost 0 points 2 monthsFeb 24, 2025 07:47:45 ago (+0/-0)

It all became mixed. We’re Catholic so we all had to be named after saints until the 1960s I think it was, so even where Irish names pre-exist our Christianisation in the 6th century the only ones that remained in use are those that were related to Christianity. This is the case across all countries here afaik - not many Englishmen are called things like Ethelwulf anymore even though Ethelwulf was a Christian king in England. And anyway just cos Christianity originated in the Middle East doesn’t really make it a Middle Eastern faith; it was codified in Rome and Christendom has referred to European peoples and their colonies for centuries now.
