Best revolver for concealed carry?

Looking to get my CCW license within the next week or so. I've done a bit of research and decided that I'd like to go with a revolver. What are some good, reliable options in the $300-$500 price range? I've had my eye on the Rock Island M206, but would prefer to buy American if possible.

Try to find a nearby shooting range that rents guns. Try out a few to find what feels good in your hand, and is easy to aim. Nothing worse than spending $300-500 then find out you're not comfortable with the gun.

That's a great suggestion. I did something of the same thing. You need to feel the firearm in your hand to get a feel of its weight and recoil.

A j-frame Smith in 38 special. Rides so easily in a pocket. Easy to carry daily. I carry the 642 hammerless model.

A 65 or 66 is a slightly bigger option if you don't want to pocket carry so much.

I personally love pocket carry because it is so easy with my different choices of clothing. And 38 special and 380 are adequate with today's bullet technology (underwood extreme defenders/penetrators)

Cops carried. 38spl for years before auto loading pistol and it's a fine choice for a revolver die hard.

They aren't the most fun to shoot. With the proper defense ammo, they can be snappy. I don't mind weapon recoil, but a new shooter may flinch. Only takes a bit of practice to control.

If you rent a model 642, try it against a model 65, 66, or even a 686. Bigger revolvers shoot 38 special easily. Very easy to shoot accurately. And then they'll be big enough to shoot 357 mag, which is a great round. Plenty of power to stop large, drugged threats. Unfortunately the larger guns get harder to find for less than $500. Why do you want a revolver and not a magfed semiauto that is slimmer, has higher capacity, is faster to reload, weighs less, is easier to conceal, probably costs less, and is just as, if not more, reliable than a revolver?

also you can put a custom loadout with different shell types

Because I don't need more than 6 shots, and revolvers are more reliable. Also kind of a personal taste thing. I'll eventually buy a magfed semi at some point too, a man can never have too many guns.

It's more common than you may think that a person needs WAY more than 6 shots in a defensive situation. I want access to as many shots as possible. My carry piece is 15+1 plus a 15rd back up mag. You do realize that niggers roll in packs, right?

That's fine. I shot revolvers before semiautos, but my tastes changed immediately upon shooting semiautos, and haven't changed back. Simply put, semiautos are supeior in every way, with one exception: revolvers are sometimes chambered in calibers that are too large/long to be practical for a magfed semiauto, but that doesn't matter to me for a conceal carry piece. 9mm+p is more than powerful enough for human threats.

I'll eventually buy a magfed semi at some point too.

Taurus Judge snub. I've seen them for around $600 so a little over, but worth it. Or the public defender.

Some additional considerations in favor of the Judge (full disclosure: I've never fired one, so I can't offer you an informed opinion as to form/function).

Maybe someone here knows otherwise and I've heard it's harder to perform ballistic forensics on shotguns. That and revolvers retain shells.

I have shot the Taurus Judge Public Defender with a polymer frame. I was shooting 2.5" .410 shells with #8 birdshot. the gun is pretty light and pinky has nothing to grasp onto. You will rarely practice with it because it hurts to shoot. I can shoot 200rds from my Glock 17 and my hand is just fine afterwards. But after 5 rounds through that Public Defender, I didn't want to shoot it anymore. You will feel the pain from the recoil in the webbing between your index finger and thumb.

Looks like upgrades are available. The Public Defender looks to specifically have the shorter grip for concealment purposes where as other options have a longer grip stock. for $25 one of the aftermarket grips is probably worth a try at least for range use.

Yes, the Public Defender was designed for concealment purposes, hence the shorter grip and lighter frame. The aftermarket grip you linked is specifically "NOT" intended for the Public Defender: "Does not fit steel, stainless steel, or alloy Public Defender models and is not recommended for Polymer Public Defender models."

Long story short, if OP is looking for a revolver for concealed carry, I would not personally recommend the Taurus Judge Public Defender, but to each their own.

Multiple friends had Smith and Wesson .357s in high school and we'd go shoot them. They are surprisingly accurate and have smooth actions. I still prefer semi-autos, but can understand the attraction. Good advice to try before you buy.

Glocks are definitely nice, but I prefer American made weapons. Sounds like a trifle, but I want to support fellow patriots whenever I can.

I'm not a revolver expert but you might consider 9mm over .38 special based on ammo cost and availability. Certainly if you have other 9mm guns you won't have to buy ammo that only one gun can use. Check a ballistics chart, the 9mm has more energy too. The Ruger LCR 9mm looks pretty good if you can find a used one.

Just curious why you're selecting a revolver? I personally wouldn't go that route unless you wanted to carry enormous caliber which is what revolver is good for. They're a bit bulky a bit clumsy, have a heavy as fuck trigger, just a bit harder all round to respond quickly with. Modern automatics by big names like glock and sig smith&wesson are incredibly reliable. The new trigger mechanisms don't shoot by accident, they drop them out of a helicopter loaded from 400ft up and they don't go off.

The Bersa Thunder .380 is small but effective. Since I live in Commiefornia, my selection for guns is limited by state law, but this one does the trick. The standard magazine holds seven rounds, although you can buy longer magazines. It's compact, but it packs a wallop. It's Argentinian, but it's priced well. American made guns tend to be more expensive. My other guns are US made, but this one is good for this purpose.
