Talk.lol was launched by an old goat who was prominent on searchvoat.co chat, and set up a voat.xyz mirror/alternate site URL, which took you to the site, but with a voat themed dark mode.

When he first launched, he considered making voat.xyz being the "NSFW" site, and "talk.lol" the SFW site, but since, I think have merged.

Talk.lol is the site, and those with accounts prior to the cutoff of voat.xyz as a mirror site being a separate site are able to access "Voatmode" colorizer which makes the links say voat.xyz instead of talk.lol, and the original voat themed dark mode skin still appears.

When Bluray came out it had a direct competitor called HD-DVD. Someone leaked a key that would unlock any HD-DVD and allow people to copy it freely. People posted the key on a website called Digg that was really popular at the time. Digg started banning people who would post the key. So people started leaving Digg in droves for their censorship and ironically ended up at reddit because they didn't censor. Yes, the reason reddit became popular was because they didn't censor anything.
