Possible new mods

I've reached out to users @lord_nougat and @SparklingWiggle and asked if they are interested. Both seem like good intelligent goats, but I'd like to get confirmation from the community. The position won't be as involved or have the same tools/authority Cynabuns had, but they'll still be able to help out members of the community if they choose. Their main purpose is peace of mind for myself, so I can step away when needed without having to feel the need to check up on things constantly. Do you approve of these users as mods here? If not, why? Only serious replies will be taken into consideration.

Edit: Welcome a board @lord_nougat and @SparklingWiggle. They don't have mod powers yet, but at some point this weekend it will be official. Thank you all for your feedback. I know loading of big threads like this takes a long time. This months I have to renew domains, etc. so I am going to invest some time into improvements, I will see what I can do.

I like both of these users, but my complaint has nothing to do with your choice of mods.

Many of us got burned by completely corrupt and dishonest moderation at Poal. I think there needs to be an appeal procedure established for any ban actions. AOU would go on an emotional bender and ban like crazy without consequence. If someone wants to argue that this is the owner's prerogative, I'd agree that it is. But at the same time, and in terms of the health of a community over time, there needs to be a way to balance the mod power with each individual's 'day in court'. In the end, choices do come down to site ownership, but that should be after some kind of deliberative process that is transparent to the community as a whole.

It's any owner's privilege to be a tyrant if they want to be. I'm saying this only based on observations gathered from being at ye olde Voat, Poal, and now here.

@system should be able to rely on having some help from users he trusts. The danger comes only when mod behavior can possibly go unchecked. It can turn an otherwise decent person into an asshole.

So I'd just propose that at the same time as you install mods, you also lay out a policy for people to publicly appeal their ban, say, starting a thread where that person can respond to not only mods but commentary from other community members and basically plead their case. After all is said and done, and the community gives a 'jury recommendation', then the final authoritative choice rests on mods and admin.

This would also require that the community as a whole recognizes that (a) they have the same privilege to their day in court, (b) they will have a voice that will be acknowledged in the process, and (c) you don't get to throw a fit when the process is over and mods/admin don't decide the way you think they ought to. The point is transparency, so that it will be obvious over time if mods are acting in the interests of the community or not - and you'll know by how many people jump ship or remain on board.

I'm not sure that there is any option, in principle, that isn't exploitable. I would be interested to know what you had in mind though.

I doubt if what I'm suggesting would require many resources. Say that a mod suggests a ban. We create a sticky post on front where the mod/admin can state the situation and the reason why the ban is commencing. People in the community are able to comment and give their two cents. The person to-be-banned is able to respond, and possibly based on their conduct convince the mod/s against the ban.

It's really quite informal. The point, again, is not to turn this into some flat democracy (that's got its weaknesses, right) but to simply make the decision-making transparent, so that community members know the details. One major problem at Poal was how AOU would ghost all of the information. Total lack of transparency. He would come back and slander a person for being a pedophile without that individual's ability to get a word in on their own behalf. At least this way, people can decide if they think the ban is shit and then make a decision about how they continue to use the site accordingly.

So a mod approaches @system with the intent to ban. They create a sticky and set a time limit. The thread will be up for a day, or something. At the end of the day, mods read (or have been following) the progress of the thread and they make their decision. No deleted comments. Nobody failing to be heard. I think this would be good - IF modding is where we are headed. Everybody potentially gets to be Socrates before they're nixed.

Now, it might be even better to just have a whole sub devoted to these kinds of posts. Because not every ban is going to require this sort of deliberation. Some bot account is going to get offed; the Judge Judy sub just becomes more like a ban log for those kinds of entries. You'll naturally know there was no controversy because nobody will participate in those threads. But on occasion there may be a more controversial ban, and that post in the sub will generate a lot more activity. Seems like this could keep mods more accountable.

Yeah, I don't quite grasp how it affected people. I saw how Poal directly screwed with people by changing points, adding labels, and banning people. No mod should have the power to ban. There has been too many bans on this site as it is, speaking of which do you have a list of all banned users it would be nice to have that.

They should have an extremely limited role of being able to temporarily put an account in timeout until YOU personally are available to make a decision. As well as a limited role to temporarily censor or remove a post/ comment if it violates the TOS. They should have no actual power at all, only delegation of tasks that we don't want on the front page until you show up.

I would have chosen @heygeorge and @Rotteuxx or other members of former /Protectvoat who contributed to gathering information on problem users. Those who have voiced concern for mod abuse and ban abuse, upholding the values of Voat being the last place for free discourse of ideas.

I've been keeping my eye open for people I think would be good. Sparkle and I spoke previously about it, and he's reached out to me numerous times about various stuff. Nougat just seemed like the quintessential goat and a good guy who I think would be good fit. Obviously I wouldn't let anyone come in and be a tyrant, that just goes against everything I stand for. We'll see how it goes.
