Keeping the goat fed and alive in 2025 and beyond

Happy new year upgoat. I'm glad to say goodbye to 2024, the worst year of my life. 2025 is going to be a good year. We have the "good" jew in office again. Free speech is cool again and people are fed up with the bullshit being forced down our throats constantly. I guess we'll see what happens. One thing I do know is it will be a pivotal year for Upgoat.

Back in October our hosting provider increased our rate by 3X. Fortunately they offered to grandfather in our old rate but this is temporary and if I make any changes to the account we'll lose it. If/when that happens it will be harder to justify keeping this place going. It's been 4 years and traffic has flatlined. I'm just tired and bored to be honest. I feel like I've accomplished everything I set out to do. It is still cheap enough to shell out, it went from about $400 a year to over $1100, but I am not a rich man. If prices continue to go up I will have to put the goat on the chopping block.

But I know there are more than a few people who care about this place and I don't take that lightly. I care about you more than I care about the website itself. Upgoat is no Voat but it's become a cozy home for a good chunk of people, myself included. So shutting down isn't something I take lightly. But it's an alluring option I won't lie. It is stressful being in this position, having to worry about being doxxed, or fucked with, having to worry about governments and laws. The world is a scary fucking place right now. Being a nobody is appealing. But free speech is something I am passionate about. It's worth being persecuted and even dying for because I wouldn't want to live in a world without it. That's the only thing driving this place. But I feel like I've given it my all and have nothing to show for it after nearly 4 years.

So I'm conflicted. Have been for awhile, even before the price increase which is more than likely just an alignment to reflect our new fucked up economy (thanks Biden). Our host has been great when it comes to uptime, performance and customer service so looking elsewhere for hosting hasn't even crossed my mind.

So something needs to change. But my options are limited. I value my privacy above money and success and that limits my options greatly.

Many have suggested I begin accepting crypto. I am humbled by your generosity. Seriously. But I never understood it well enough to feel comfortable taking it. I didn't just want to sign up for a website and let it handle everything without me having a clue what is going on. So I've been paying attention to the scene for the past couple years and I now feel comfortable enough running my own wallets on own machines without fucking it up. I'm sure you crypto bros are laughing, but I really had no interest in crypto. I'm not a money guy. Taking money from people is not something I take lightly, I'm a horrible sales person. But not having to worry about paying out of pocket to keep this place running will be a big burden off my back. And the idea of reinvesting into the site and growing is appealing. So fuck it. The upgoat vault will be used strictly to pay for the costs of the site. Not having a safety blanket of capital has stunted this place's growth. With it I will have the confidence to start branching out, adding image hosting and other improvements. These accounts will hopefully ensure we are online for years to come.

I also created separate addresses for myself. If you appreciate the time and effort I put into the place you can donate to me directly through the tip addresses.

Having separate addresses will hopefully avoid any confusion and fuckery. The vault is for website costs; hosting, domains, certs and other misc costs. The tip addresses are for me, allowing myself to maybe have a steak or a cheeseburger every once in a while.

DO NOT donate if you can't afford to. Don't go out trying to obtain crypto just to give. Only donate if you already have crypto and can spare a few bits to keep this place going. I don't want anyone to feel obligated.

I value everyone who contributes to the site through discussion, content submission, and voting. That organic engagement cannot be bought. You people are why this place exists at all. Likewise, there are numerous factors driving Bitcoin price demand. First, some fundamental features is basically an awareness thing; ie- as more people like you become aware of its features, the demand increases. Some of these fundamental features have already been mentioned:

- fixed cap
- txs can't be forged
- txs can't be reversed (no refunds, no bankman avail to reverse a tx)
- permanent tx record (nice for keeping track of system's spending for example)
- can't be intercepted* (without force or getting hacked, protocol is secure but your physical and network security is on you)

IMO the biggest factor to drive the price of Bitcoin is that you can transact it without interference. There is some value there, yeah? Like imagine if you needed to leave the country for a long time and had $1m to bring. You gunna take that in cash? Put it in stocks and cash out in your new country of residence? Wire it ?

Bitcoin (and Monero) is the safest, simplest option for moving large sums of funds. Lot's of people do have large sums and yes, they travel or like the peace of mind in having funds stored securely. That value increases in proportion to the loss of value (and collapse) of paper-based economic systems.

I'd go into crypto with the attitude that it's OK to burn $100 USD just for the experience and to get over the learning curve.

You can probably start with $10 USD initially.
But fees are going to be steep if you are just doing small transactions.
All-in, commit to burning $15 USD just to play with $10 USD in BTC.
Once you have your bearings, you can take steps to minimize the fees.
I think coinbase has a 0 fees plan if you have a $30 USD/month subscription.
It's worth it if you get into crypto and do lots of transactions.
But I'd just eat the fees upfront if you are just getting into it.
Consider the fees a cost of learning the ropes.

IS a hardware wallet worth it? The adage in crypto is "not your keys, not your coins". The only way to self custody is to keep your private keys in your own possession. I was using ledger wallet - company out of France using propriety tech and closed source. Trezor, on the other hand is out of some former eastern bloc country like romania or some shit, but it's an open source platform. With a HW wallet, your keys are in your possession. The big risk with crypto is theft: FTX, Mt. Gox, etc. Self-custody is a measure of protection akin to keeping your gold coins under your mattress as opposed to safe deposit box. Of course, there is no actual coins, the entire model is analogous to a massive shared spreadsheet (distributed ledger) in the cloud that uses standard public key infrastructure as a means to authenticate end-users and allow them to transfer deposits / withdrawals back and forth to each other. There are miners that are solving cryptographic problems in hopes of adding additional block rewards to their own addresses, node operators that validate changes to the block chain ledger and wallet holders. Your wallet can be in your custody, or on an exchange, or using a 3rd party (i.e. edge wallet). I am not an expert and keep things focused on BTC for two reasons: 1.) BTC has captured the attention of institutional money (Fidelity, Blackrock, etc), assuring its' continued increases in value, and 2.) I don't put the time into studying the thousands of other crypto tokens (i.e. ERC-20 tokens, developed using the ETH protocol) - every one is a study in and of itself. But the short answer to your question: yes, get a HW wallet

I don't trade crypto's - I work a full time job and don't have the time to put into it, I just treat my BTC wallet on a Trezor device as a savings account basically and HODL. With coding? I've always wanted someone to help. I originally wanted searchvoat to serve as co-admin. In hindsight I am glad that didn't work out. These days I don't know about giving out the keys. AI could easily fix any issue with the code, and practically implement anything we want. I suppose I could easily implement solutions already coded up. If you have an idea or prototype let me see what you have.

On a maybe related note I am considering playing around with a decentralized blockchain based site based on plebbit. with something new like this I'd love to get people in on a low level if they are interested and have shown their worth here.

The internet is dying. And there are a few reasons for it. I could write a whole book on this. Censorship of course is a big reason. Brain dead public is another. Fuck apps. Use a website if you must. Respect what you put on your phone. Respect yourself and your data.

How high end and how many machines to run this site? Is this vps or on a dedicated machine?

I colocate raspi type devices. Some data centers/isp charge less then $8 a month. A couple of my devices have 4TB storage. Hope you can shop around. I just think you may be getting ripped off unless this site needs some high end stuff. In china they sell mini pc's that are solid state, uses the case as a heatsink and are fairly powerfull.
